Streamyx Fair Usage Policy
Source: Streamyx
TM is committed to ensuring our customers receive the best broadband service at the most competitive price. To achieve this goal, we provide a contended broadband service. This means our Internet bandwidth (capacity) is catered to be shared by all our customers at any one point in time, to ensure we provide a satisfactory and acceptable performance on an equal basis to all our customers.
However, a small number of customers use more than their “fair share” of the Internet bandwidth provided by us. On average, about 10% of our customers are using a disproportionate amount of Internet bandwidth. These customers degrade the performance of our broadband service by taking bandwidth away from other customers, who use the service fairly.
For example, some customers use P2P or file sharing software, which constantly sends and receives videos and other types of very large files, throughout the day. These activities (download and upload continuously) use a lot of bandwidth and can significantly reduce the connection speed, which other customers are getting to access the Internet during peak hours. We don’t believe this is fair to the vast majority of our customers.
We wish to bring to your attention our traffic prioritization policy with regards to P2P and Fair Usage Policy. We would like to reiterate that the P2P throughput is subject to peers (seed) availability and their throughput as well. Kindly note that TM does not have any control over peers’ availability or throughput.
The Fair Usage Policy automatically identifies the extremely heavy users and manages their bandwidth in order to protect the service of all our other customers. This traffic prioritization policy will protect the quality of service for the majority of our customers when they use the service, while at the same time, still allowing the extremely heavy users to continue to send and receive files with certain restrictions. With this policy in place, we will prioritize Internet activities like web browsing, live streaming, messaging applications and VOIP access while traffic to P2P sites will be given lower priority, due to the high bandwidth consumption of such services.
We wish to also highlight that as an Internet Service Provider (ISP), TM only provides access to the Internet and does not guarantee content delivery and performance where it is not within the domain of TM as an ISP. In fact, our international traffic management policy is designed to cater for all our customers so they have an optimal surfing experience within the normal limits of Internet usage.
As our priority is for all our customers to have a positive Internet experience, we wish to emphasize that it is important for all our customers to practice responsible usage of the allocated bandwidth based on normal usage.
We would like to reiterate that we are not against the use of P2P but we would like to educate our customers that the usage of excessive P2P does impact the overall service availability to our other customers.
TM does provide every customer with an allocated bandwidth, where other customers may use when not used by the others. Unfortunately, the nature of P2P more often than not, takes more than their allocated bandwidth, thus causing undue setbacks for other users when they want to use the service.
As a responsible service provider, we believe it is our responsibility and commitment to educate and encourage responsible usage of the infrastructure we provide.
Educate? go to hell la.. your customers are illiterate.. lol
I have terminated my stupid Maxis plan due to unknown RM346, paying the termination fees..
I have left the Streamyx in my house due to slow speed..
And maybe helllloooo to Digi? or Celcom??
Definitely not Maxis.. lol
Anyway, it’s good to hear that Maxis is upgrading my JB house broadband line to 1Mbps for FREE.. Yes, FREE.. weird.. when does Maxis turned to be so good? ;)
Just a final word, P2p will suck all the bandwidth.. if u dont believe, download bitcomet or bittorrent or thunder yourself and download..
Then open up your IE or firefox or chrome and surf.. u will feel the differences..
AND.. remember, u’re not alone in the house using it.. so read this for more info :)
What is Bandwidth?
Simply put, bandwidth is the carrying capacity of a network. It’s rather like a highway. Four lane highways can carry more traffic than two lane highways. At a certain level, even a six lane highway can become saturated.
:: Bandwidth is finite ::
So the speed and performance on a network (or highway) is inversely proportional to the amount of traffic it carries: more traffic = slower speeds.
:: Performance is based on volume of traffic ::
Like a highway, a data network is shared by all the users who have access to it. There are no reserved or express lanes. The more bandwidth any one individual uses, the less there is available for the rest of the user population.
:: Bandwidth is shared ::
What are peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs?
P2P file sharing programs are designed to let people easily exchange music, movies, video and other files over the Internet.
What effect do P2P file sharing apps have on bandwidth?
The same effect that a herd of elephants have on a small watering hole: They use it all. Every last bit of bandwidth that is available will be sucked up by file sharing applications.
How do file sharing apps use so much bandwidth?
The size of the files being shared and the act of sharing combine to eat up a network’s limited amount of bandwidth. They act as clients, enabling you to download files from other participating systems, and they convert your computer into a server, allowing other clients to download material from you.
It’s a bit like throwing a barbecue and having everyone who smells the smoke drive down your street, park in your driveway, and come into your backyard. Only the smoke isn’t limited to your neighborhood. It travels around the world and everyone who likes what you’re cooking is free to come. In very short order, the carrying capacity of your street, not to mention your backyard, is exceeded.
So… How can I reduce my bandwidth usage?
The best way to avoid being a bandwidth hog is to remove (uninstall) all peer-to-peer file-sharing programs from your computer.
If you insist on keeping your file-sharing programs on your computer, learn how to use them responsibly so you do not use up the local network resources.
Turn off your p2p application
If you’re using your computer, but you’re not using your p2p application, make certain the application is turned off and not running in the background. Several p2p applications run in the background even if you think you’ve quit the application.
Do not set up your p2p application to start automatically when your system starts.
You may have done this when you installed the application. With this configuration you may not realize your p2p application is running and using system and network resources.
The best solution for me is NOT to download at all.. I don’t download and heck, i saved up my bandwidth for other people to use for their P2P? lol
Finally get my braodband service back after a long 3-4 weeks of No-Online life…However, as i said in the previous blog, i had been doing my website offline and sometimes do go to my mom office to online a while.. Now,my ISP is Maxis Broadband..Actually Maxis also not that good.. Their services also not that up-to-standard… Hehe.. As you know, they promised me to come my house last weekend.. And.. They didn’t show up.. Ihave been waiting for the whole day you know.. My mom called them and they said dunno leh.. Gotta ask the technician.. Then, my mom called the Kuala Lumpur main office.. They said: “Sorry madam, we’re out of stock..No more modem..” I was stunned at that moment..No more modem??What the hell??Hehe..They knew how many subscriber and should prepare the modems before it..All of them..However, they didn’t do it..They just pushing here and there..Giving many excuses.. Soon after a week on 22nd of April, i called them and pestered them..Haha..Early in the morning i called the installer Handphone number and they said will come today.. Finally, they came..Hehe..Thay said they’re from KL..The JB technician cannot cope up so the main office asked them to com down and help out..
Yesterday just said GoLightSpeed is better than Streamyx, today i met some problems just now..Can’t get the IP address as my ISP is wireless so gotta get the desired IP only can online..Haiz..Very Sueh and pantang when u say the things good den it becomes bad..that’s the normal things we always face..GoLightSpeed and Streamyx brother and sister la..Now must “sut” them nicely or else i’ll get throttled again..hehe..I called the office in JB just now..An office girl picked up the phone..I told her the problem and she said the technician will call back later..I was wondering how come she can’t call the technician right now?? A few minutes later, a call to my HP..Showing “Private Number”..How come they wanna put “Private Number”?? Scared i always go and complain at them?Hahaz..Anyway, as long as they can solve my problems anything will be just fine for me..However, he asked me to do this and do that..In the end also can’t get the problem fixed..Dunno how “pro” are they..Hehe…And 1 more thing..He’s calling from KL..there’s no technician in JB!! Oh gosh..I’m wondering how are they going to fix the problem through phone ONLY..They thought that just give some simple instructions then everything will solve it by itself?Hehe…They should give better service la..Or else which ISP also will just be the same as Streamyx.. I heard Maxis is much better..I mean the service..So I’m wondering whether to switch to it..Hehe..If my problem cannot be solved by this week, they will get form me..Haha..Will call them and complain till they get frustrated…Nightmare for those workers..Dreaming of “How to fix LWJ broadband?”
