Coral View Island Resort, Pulau Perhentian Island (2015)

We wanted to visit this island ever since I was in Kuantan. Somehow or rather we didn’t get to make it. So when Firefly started the new Senai-Kota Bharu flight, we quickly booked it.

Arrived at the Pengkalan Chepa Airport, Kota Bharu after about 1 hour delay from Johor Bahru. At the airport was the representative from Coral View Island Resort to greet us. Soon we were on our way to Kuala Besut to take a boat to Pulau Perhentian Besar. On the way, we passed through villages. Actually we had visited Kelantan more than 20 years ago and it looks like not much change after so many years!

After about an hour taxi ride, we reached the Kuala Besut Coral View Island Resort sales office. The sales office looks run down. My heart sank a little after seeing the office worrying that the resort at the island will be the same.

We waited for about half an hour at the jetty for other passengers to join us. The sky was turning dark indicating that rain would be falling soon! Taking a boat on a rough sea in heavy rain? Oh no! I was praying that the dark cloud would soon go away!

Thank God. The rain never came! However the sea was choppy. Sitting on the uncomfortable small boat was like riding on a roller coaster! There were 13 of us excluding the two boatmen. The signboard on the boat clearly shows that the maximum passengers allowed is 12. I asked the boatman regarding the overloading. He coolly answered “tak ape; satu lebih sahaja” . I looked around, there wasn’t anyone who is overweight. So I thought it should be alright!

After about 45 minutes boat ride, finally we reached our destination! OMG! There was no jetty for us to disembark. I didn’t know this when I booked the resort! Moreover, when we reached there, it was low tide. So a smaller boat came over to ferry us to the shore and of course we got our feet wet when we got down from the boat.

A short distance walk on the sand took us to the lobby cum restaurant of the resort. Our chalet is just a few meters from the lobby. Well, not bad. The best part of this chalet is the front of the chalet  is facing the east while the back is facing the west. So we can catch both sunrise and sunset!

There was no program on the first day. So we just walked along the beach and exploring the surrounding of the resort.

We walked to Perhentian Island Resort situated next to our resort. The resort is the largest one in Pulau Perhentian Island. We didn’t book this one because of some not very good reviews regarding the poor maintenance in Tripadvisor. In fact there is a pedestrian coastal walkway linking the two resorts.

We also walked to nearby chalets to survey around. In fact there are many chalets along this stretch of beaches.

In the evening we strolled along the beach to enjoy the evening breeze as well as to catch the sun set.

At night we had dinner at the Sri Tanjung Restaurant. We ordered sea food ‘tomyam’ and steamed grouper. The sea food tomyam was fresh and piquant.  It was highly recommended by the waiter who also told us that the cook is a  chef from Thailand. So he can cook authentic Thai cuisine. FYI, all alcoholic drinks are prohibited in this restaurant.

If you really yearn for a beer or two, you may purchase it at the restaurant nearby and consume in your private room.

Worked up early in the morning to catch the sunrise.

After breakfast, we were ready to go for snorkeling around the islands. Along the way, we could see beautiful and stunning scenery, enjoyed the cool sea breeze.  The coastal line was magnificent with the sights of pristine sand, rocks and cliffs.

The first stop was to see coral and fish. Of course the corals are very colourful and beautiful, occasionally with some unknown creatures resting on it.  At the second stop, we managed to sight some docile  sharks. Seeing the sharks swimming in the sea water is a real good experience! Too bad we didn’t have underwater camera to snapshot the beautiful sharks!

The third stop was to watch sea turtles. However, there was only one miserable turtle at that time and at least 20 to 30 people were chasing after the poor turtle!

The last stop was to see coral and fish again at another point. The water was crystal clear with all sorts of sea creatures. I realize that snorkeling is one sure way  to de-stress!

One biggest joke of the day was the boatman forgot to bring along the ladder for us to climb up the boat. At the last stop, we were really out of luck! The engine stalled and he was not able to borrow a ladder for us. So we were forced to soak in the water for at least 20 minutes before the motor started working again!

In the evening, we just relaxed and walked again to Perhentian Island Resort to explore more on the island.

There's a open massage centre here.. From what I observed, there are also a lot of mosy! Anyway, it's very popular among the angmohs!

That night we had barbeque dinner. But it was a total  disappointment as the food was not good at all. The chicken meat and beef were hard without any barbeque sauce.  We had anticipated something similar to the one we had in D’coconut Resort at Pulau Besar, Johor.

Disappointed BBQ dinner!

On the third day, we checked out at around 12.00 pm bidding goodbye to this beautiful island. I  was really enchanted by the beautiful islands.

Another 45 minutes boat ride took us back to Kuala Besut again. We took a cab to Kota Bharu and checked into Tune Hotel as we didn’t have much time in Kota Bharu and our flight was early in the next morning. In the evening, we just walked around the hotel area. This hotel is situated next to KB Mall, the largest mall in Kota Bharu. Well, there were some big changes in the town since I last visited 20 over years ago.
