Part 4: Auckland and Convocation Ceremony at Aotea Convention Centre.

Day 9

We didn’t follow our tour group back to KL, instead we stayed on for another 4 nights in Auckland to attend Wei Vvy’s Convocation held at Aotea Convention Centre, Queenstreet, Auckland.

We checked-in Waldorf Tetra Service Apartment, Wakefield which is within walking distance to AUT as well as Aotea Convention Centre.

We walked around Auckland City. It was drizzling, but that didn’t deter us from exploring Auckland City on our own. We walked to Viaduct Harbour and Bristomart, the main bus station in Auckland. We also went to i-site at Sky Tower to get more information about Auckland City Tour.

At night, Wei Vvy flew to Auckland to join us and his course-mate Linda Zheng took us to the Harbour where we had a sumptuous sea food dinner at Hammer Head restaurant.

Day 10

After breakfast, we went to AUT to collect his convocation pass and then took a bus from Symond Street to St George Street to get Vvy’s graduation gown, hood and mortar board.

In the afternoon, Linda drove us to One Tree Hill for pre-convocation outdoor photo shooting.  It was very windy up there. Actually, Auckland has quite a number of hills in the city where you can have a panoramic view of the city. One Tree Hill is just one of them.

At night we went to Queenstreet and we had Korean dinner.

Day 11

Finally the big day came. However the convocation was at 5.00 pm. So we still had time to roam around Auckland. We took a bus to Mt Eden, another hill in Auckland City. We walked up to the hill summit to have a 360o panoramic view of Auckland City. The hiking took us about 25 minutes. At certain part of the road, there are short cuts to cut short your  journey.

I would say it is worth the effort to hike up there as the view of Auckland City is magnificent and spectacular. The air is fresh. As you walk around the summit, you can feel the strong wind blowing towards you. It was summer. However  it was still cold with temperature around 20oC at that time. At the summit, there is a small inactive volcano crater. But do not expect to see the volcano crater as the one you would see in Indonesia. You will be truly disappointed!

There is even a clean washroom on the way down the hill.

At 4.30 pm, we were already at Aotea Convention Centre. The convocation was real grand. It lasted about 2 hours. Then we proceeded to AUT to have post-convocation photo shooting at AUT city campus. So finally, Wei Vvy has graduated. He will be entering another new phase in life. All the best wishes to him. Hope he will succeed in life.

Day 12

Today will be the last day in Auckland to move around as we will be departing the next day. So we decided to go north. Our initial plan was to go to Bay of Island which will take us about 3 hours. However, we woke up late and only started the journey at around 10 am. So we only reached Whangarei. On the way, we stopped at Snell’s Beach and Wilford. Of course we didn’t miss to visit the Whangarei water falls which is even bigger and more beautiful than Huka Falls.

By the time we reached Auckland again, it was evening. So we went for Japanese food.
